Context & docs

Pull Google Docs, Sheets and Slides into your specs

Most projects have something important sitting in a Google Doc - the statement of work, the pricing sheet, the deck the client actually signed off. Connect Google Drive, pick up to five files through Google's own Picker, and Spectr reads them every time it drafts: docs as text, spreadsheets tab by tab, decks slide by slide including the speaker notes.

How it connects

OAuth using Google's narrow per-file scope. Spectr can only ever open the specific files you select in the Picker - it has no view of the rest of your Drive.

Before you start

No plan requirement. Connections are configured per project, and every credential is encrypted at rest.

What Spectr reads from Google Drive

Up to five pinned files
Selected through the Google Picker, with tabs for Docs, Sheets and Slides. You can browse into subfolders while picking, but files are granted individually - which is what keeps the permission genuinely narrow.
Documents, spreadsheets and presentations
A Doc is read as text; a Sheet is rendered as one text table per tab; a deck is read slide by slide including speaker notes.
Transcript duplicates are dropped
A Google Doc that merely restates the meeting transcript is detected and skipped, so the same content does not consume the context budget twice.

A person approves everything before it is published

Spectr generates specs and stories, then stops. Every story goes to a review page where you approve it, edit it inline, or reject it - individually or in bulk. Only approved stories reach an issue tracker. There is no auto-publish setting to switch on, because a backlog nobody read is not a saving.

Setting it up

  1. In Spectr, open the project and go to Integrations.

  2. Choose Google and click Connect, then authorise on Google's consent screen.

  3. Use the Google Picker to select up to five Docs, Sheets or Slides. Multi-select is enabled.

  4. Generate a spec sheet. The Context Gathered panel lists the files Spectr read.

Frequently asked questions

Can Spectr see my whole Google Drive?

No. Spectr uses Google's per-file scope, which grants access only to files you explicitly select in the Picker. Everything else in your Drive is invisible to it.

Can I paste a Google Doc link instead of using the Picker?

No, and the reason is the permission model rather than a missing feature. Access is granted by the act of selecting a file in the Picker - a pasted URL provides an id but no grant, so it could never actually be read.

Can I select a whole folder?

No. Under the per-file scope, selecting a folder grants access to the folder object and not to the files inside it. Navigate into the folder in the Picker and select the files you want.
